FOR SKYPE enthusiasts, a Bluetooth based handset which can work up to 100 metres away from the PC, the Trendnet Clearsky, TVP-SP1BK, will soon be available in the UK through Elite Devices. It is expected to retail at just under £100 (inc VAT).

In order to function correctly, the Clearsky utilises the very latest version of Bluetooth – 2.0 – and to ensure the connexion works properly, customers get the appropriate Bluetooth 2.0 dongle included in this particular package.

The handset supports all of the very latest functions offered by Skype so it will be easy to make those free VOIP calls to other Skype users wherever you happen to be in the house or office.

Presently the INQ is utilising the LAN Cordless DUALphone supplied by RTX for its Skype telephony. This cordless handset connects to both fixed line telephony services (such as BT) as well as to Skype via the PC's broadband connexion.

The DUALphone uses DECT technology instead of Bluetooth - so here in Europe it is possible to use this handset some 300 metres away from the PC!

A new version of this handset is due to be released at the forthcoming CeBIT show in Hangover, Germany. It features a colour display which will let users view Web based information such as the latest news, e-mail, stock market data, weather forecasts, traffic queues or sports results.

The availability of such services depends on the carrier to which the handset is connected but RTX claims that at least one major operator has already tested this capability. Elite also carries RTX's product line.
