Samsung new model, SGH-i450, SGH-F330, and SGH-F210

Samsung Electronics has unveiled a refreshed lineup of three new cell phones that are targeted at music lovers.

The handsets have more of an emphasis on music than other phones and are intended to be just as much music player as cell phone. The SGH-i450, SGH-F330, and SGH-F210 are aimed at the same market that rival Sony has had success in with its Walkman music handsets.

The top-of-the-range SGH-i450 has as its top feature an amplifier developed by high-end audio specialists Bang & Olufsen. The smartphone runs the Symbian S60 software platform and is a dual-slider design: slide up and the smartphone features are activated, slide down and the music player functions appear on the 2.4-inch display.

One weak point of the handset is the amount of built-in memory, which is just 35MB. That's about enough for 7 to 10 songs, which is dissapointing for a music phone. Memory can be expanded up to 4GB with a Micro SD memory card.

It works on WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access) networks and supports HSDPA (high-speed downlink packet access) data service up to 3.6Mbps.

The phone will first appear in Italy at the end of October and will follow in other European countries. It will cost about €360 ($508) before carrier subsidies.

The SGH-F330 is also an HSDPA slider-handset. Music control keys are on the front and sides of the phone and other features include a 2-megapixel camera. It has an even smaller 24MB of memory but also the memory card slot. The phone is 13.5 millimeters thick and has just become available in Germany. It will be available in other European countries soon and will cost around €260 before carrier subsidies.

The third phone, the SGH-F210, has a swivel design where the top half of the handset swivels around to reveal a keypad on the bottom half. There's an FM radio built-in with RDS (radio data system) support. The handset is just 31mm wide and 21mm thick. It packs 1GB of memory and like the others can be expanded with a Micro SD memory card. It is about to be launched in Germany and will be available in other European countries soon. It will cost around €280 before carrier subsidies.

Details on launches in other markets were not immediately available.

Samsung's memory chip, MoviNAND

Samsung Electronics on Monday said it has developed a high-density, eight-gigabyte memory chip dubbed the moviNAND which it will begin mass-producing in the second quarter of the year.

The moviNAND consists of a NAND flash memory chip and a multimedia card controller. The new product provides twice the capacity and performance of a 4GB version and will enable electronics makers to develop smaller mobile devices in a wider variety of designs.

The moviNAND follows the standards for high-density embedded flash memory applications developed by the JEDEC (Joint Electron Device Engineering Council) and MMCA (MultiMediaCard Association.)

The value of the total market volume of the new product is predicted to reach about US$4 billion over the next four years. Samsung expects the moviNAND will gain popularity with cellphone and navigator makers with its high-density, high-speed, but low-noise performance.

Samsung new MH80 HDDs

While Fujitsu may have snagged the headlines on Monday for its 7200RPM 160GB SATA/300 2.5" hard disk drive (HDD), Samsung is looking to make a few headlines of its own with the availability of the world's first hybrid HDDs. Samsung new MH80 Series hybrid HDDs will be available in capacities of 80GB, 120GB and 160GB.

Samsung new MH80 HDDs will be fully compatible with Windows Vista and will offer OneNAND Flash onboard in capacities of 128MB or 256MB. The onboard flash allows for up to 50% faster OS boots, quicker resume times and increases in battery life of up to 30 minutes.

"As a leader in both hard drive and flash memory technologies, Samsung brings to market a unique hybrid hard drive that is sure to revolutionize the notebook computing experience," said Albert Kim, National Sales Manager, Storage Systems for Samsung Semiconductor. "The MH80 hybrid hard drive provides the ideal solution for two major issues that notebook PC users continually face: faster boot and resume performance and extended battery life."

Samsung claims that the MH80 Series offers five times the reliability of traditional HDDS while consuming 70-90% less power.

Hopefully, Samsung's claims will pan out in real world testing. Internal testing by Lenovo engineers has shown that hybrid HDDs aren't all they're cracked up to be.

Samsung GDDR4 with nanometer production technology

Korean electronics giant Samsung Electronicsclaims to have increased the data transfer speed of the world’s fastest graphics memory – GDDR4 (Graphics Double Data Rate, version 4) – by two-thirds. Graphics memory processes video images in desktop PCs, notebooks and workstations to move large volumes of high-definition or low-resolution video simultaneously.

Using 80-nanometer production technology, the new 4Gb/s memory running at 2.0GHz is 66% faster than today’s fastest commercially available memory – the 2.4Gb/s GDDR4, according to Samsung. The Samsung 4Gb/s graphics memory, offered in 512Mb density, has a 32-bit data bus configuration.

“Our new GDDR4 memory will add even more zip in video applications, making gaming, computer-aided design and video editing faster than ever before,” said Mueez Deen, marketing director, graphics memory, Samsung Semiconductor. “This will enable ultra-smooth movements in animation and make games incredibly realistic, resulting in a truly immersive user experience.”

The new GDDR4, which is ready for customer sampling this month and, according to Samsung, has already engendered interest from manufacturers.
