Seagate Launches 1TB Maxtor Network Storage Device

Seagate takes networked storage to one terabyte

If that old 500GB network attached storage solution is filling up to the brim Seagate has launched a 1TB version of Maxtor's Shared Storage network storage device aimed at the small office market.

The Shared Storage II 1TB Network Storage device packs dual 500GB hard drives in to a network connected shell with features sufficient for the small business world. The Shared Storage II 1TB model is an update to the Shared Storage II 500GB model which adds another 500GB hard drive to the package. Many of the features are the same including the gigabit network connectivity, dual USB ports to connect printers, digital cameras, or other storage devices.

The hard drives used are 500GB 7200RPM models with 16MB buffers for improved performance. Combined with a 10/100/1000Mb Ethernet interface users will notice an increase in speeds compared to USB/FireWire connected or even slower 100Mb/sec Ethernet connected devices.

Features of the Shared Storage II 1TB include RAID 1 support for mirroring 500GB of data to the secondary drive. The user interface also sounds similar to the one we heard about when Maxtor launched the Fusion 500GB NAS last month. After further thought, it dawns upon us that the Shared Storage II 1TB may also be based on the Fusion design or vice versa as the casing and features (except for the RAID 1 capability) are almost completely identical.

Pricing on the 1TB Shared Storage II is set at a retail $899.95.
